Dating back into the late 1890s to the early 1900s, the Bernese mountain dog and the Greater Swiss mountain dog were bred with a mastiff type to create a Rottweiler. Both the Bernese mountain dog and the Greater Swiss mountain dog had white markings on their chests. Over the years, the white markings became less common and have essentially been bred out, however, you will occasionally still have a pup born with some white markings from deep-rooted genes. Depending on the size, these markings will likely disappear as the pups grow, but larger markings will most likely remain. AKC insists that these markings are no longer breed standard and do not allow them in the show ring. Although they are not permitted in the show ring, these Rottweilers still come from incredible bloodlines are the same loving and protective pet that your family desires.
