AKC offers two types of registrations: limited registration “pet rights” and full registration “breeding rights”. On their website, AKC clearly explains the eligibility criteria and other details if these two types of registrations.
Limited registration is commonly referred to as “pet rights”. Limited registration is when the dog is registered with AKC, but any litters produced by that dog will not be eligible to be registered with AKC. Consequently, pups purchased with limited registration will likely not be used to breed. Limited registration dogs cannot be displayed in or participate in conformation dog shows. Limited registration is great for pet owners whose dogs are not going to be used for breeding for distribution or sale of their puppies.
Full registration, also referred to as “breeding rights”, is necessary for anyone planning to breed their dogs for the distribution or sale of their puppies. A dog with full registration can be displayed and compete in the show ring, including confirmation and championship dog shows.
Why does the AKC make this distinction? AKC gives the breeders the opportunity to control what type of environment their puppies are being placed in by offering these two types of registrations. It also allows breeders to maintain the value and quality of their breed by better controlling the market. At Soggy Hollow Rottweiler Ranch, we sell our dogs with limited registration unless otherwise requested by the purchaser. At that point, we will allow the sell of a pup with full registration but at a premium price.
